As of the 8th January 2019, updates to the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) require procedures to be in place to deal with harassment and bullying.
The Convention also requires account to be taken of the latest version of the Guidance on eliminating shipboard harassment and bullying jointly published by the International Chamber of Shipping and the International Transport Workers’ Federation.
Although many yachts already have a Complaints and Grievance procedure in place which already seeks to deal with complaints of bullying, consideration should be given to the training of crew in identifying whether their actions could constitute bullying.
