Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is the most commercially viable solution for large yachts although its 13m2 size and an increased weight of up to 4 tonnes could cause a significant impact on both the design and performance of the yacht especially for high performance yachts. Moreover, SCR is far less effective when the engine is at lower temperatures which means NOx reduction is harder to predict for our industry.
Globally in 2030 if NOx Tier II continues, large yachts are predicted to contribute 41 to 53 kilotonnes per year if Tier III standards are not implemented. If SCR is installed on yachts from 2021 then by 2030, it is expected that there will be NOX reductions of between 2.3 to 6.0 kilotonnes per year which will account for 0.13% of global shipping NOx emissions.
It is thought that there will be a loss of profit of between €1.2 to €1.5 billion for the sector for a six year period with between 2,100 to 3,000 job losses due to the reduction of new build orders.
